A Production of National Black Theatre + Theatre for a New Audience
Inspired by the Tony Award-winning solo phenom Sarah Jones‘s acclaimed podcast, America, Who Hurt You?, this dazzling new play channels 250 years of American history through her singular gift for transformation and never-before-shared details of her personal life. Directed by Obie Award-winner Eric Ting, AWHY moves between hilarity and heartbreak, curiosity and reckoning, as Jones embodies a sweeping cast of characters who each carry a piece of the country’s unfinished story.
Originally co-commissioned by Oxford University and National Black Theatre for a premiere at Oxford’s first-ever performing arts center, the play now arrives stateside, following a sold-out run in Brooklyn, as part of a national tour marking America’s 250th anniversary, and beyond. It is a fitting moment to ask not just who we’ve been, but who gets to tell our story going forward. Equal parts comedy, confession, and communion, America, Who Hurt You? doesn’t offer easy answers. Instead it opens up a communal space to face our nation’s most bitter truths with an open heart. In Jones’s hands, these foundational fractures become the starting point for something like grace. ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Sarah Jones is a Tony and Obie Award–winning writer and performer. Hailed by The New York Times as “a master of the genre,” Jones is renowned for her chameleon-like solo performances, which blend humor and empathy to channel a range of authentic voices. A four-time TED mainstage speaker, Jones is the founder of Foment Productions, an entertainment company focused on cultivating a culture of belonging. She first rose to national prominence with her Broadway hit Bridge & Tunnel (originally produced off-Broadway by Meryl Streep) and later created the award-winning play and film Sell/Buy/Date. Her screen work also includes a co-starring role in Netflix’s On the Verge.
Eric Ting is a two-time Obie Award-winning director whose internationally presented work spans theater, opera and dance. Theater credits include the world premieres of Anne Gridley’s Watch Me Walk (Soho Rep), Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ The Comeuppance (Signature Theatre), The 1491s’ Between Two Knees (PAC NYC, Oregon Shakespeare Festival), Lloyd Suh’s The Far Country (Atlantic Theater Co), Toshi and Bernice Johnson Reagon’s Parable of the Sower: The Opera (NYU Abu Dhabi, Lincoln Center), Alina Troyano and Jacobs-Jenkins’ Give Me Carmelita Tropicana and Jackie Sibblies Drury’s We are Proud to Present a Presentation… (Soho Rep.), Nora Chipaumire’s Miriam (BAM Next Wave), and Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig’s The World of Extreme Happiness (Manhattan Theatre Club, Goodman). Ting is one of three Co-Directors of Soho Repertory Theater in New York City and is a proud member of SDC.
